Repro steps engineers actually act on

Why most repro steps fail, the three properties of a good one, and a checklist to write them faster.

"Cannot reproduce" is a verdict. It's also a mirror: most of the time, the steps simply weren't precise enough.

The three properties of a good repro

  1. Deterministic: the same steps produce the same outcome every time.
  2. Minimal: removing any step makes it stop reproducing.
  3. Portable: a stranger with a fresh account can run them.

Common failure modes

  • Hidden state from a previous tab.
  • Cached responses that won't reproduce on a clean session.
  • Race conditions that need a specific timing.
  • Account-shape assumptions (admin vs member, paid vs free).

Checklist before you file

  • Open a fresh incognito window.
  • Log in as the smallest viable account.
  • Run the steps from the very first click.
  • Note the URL and viewport at each step.

Try the workflows you just read about.
